Summary In monogenic, recessive chloroplast mutants of maize which contain chlorophylls, and lycopene or -carotene but no normal carotenoids, great variability in the size of plastids was associated with a number of ultrastructural abnormalities. In the mutant accumulating lycopene some plastids contain dense bundles of lamellae, whereas the chloroplasts of the -carotene mutant show poor thylakoid development. Neither of the mutants was able to form normal grana.A comparison of chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios in different chloroplast fractions of normal and mutant leaves showed that plastids of small size and delicate structure contain relatively less chlorophyll than fully differentiated chloroplasts.  相似文献

Gibberella fujikuroi (Fusarium moniliforme) is a complex group of plant pathogens. Some strains produce gibberellic acid and other gibberellins that promote growth and regulate various stages in plant development.The paper describes the research effort directed to development of genetic tools for this species. The sequence of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule of the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) was determined. The molecule is 16,402 by long and its organization conforms with that of other eutherian mammals. The molecule was compared with the mtDNA of the congeneric fin whale (B. physalus). It was recently documented that the two species can hybridize and that male offspring are infertile whereas female offspring may be fertile. The present comparison made it possible to determine the degree of mtDNA difference that occurs between two species that are not completely separated by hybridization incompatibility. The difference between the complete mtDNA sequences was 7.4%. Lengths of peptide coding genes were the same in both species. Except for a small portion of the control region, disruption in alignment was usually limited to insertion/deletion of a single nucleotide. Nucleotide differences between peptide coding genes ranged from 7.1 to 10.5%, and difference at the inferred amino acid level was 0.0–7.9%. In the rRNA genes the mean transition difference was 3.8%. This figure is similar in degree to the difference (3.4%) between the 12S rRNA gene of humans and the chimpanzee. The mtDNA differences between the two whale species, involving both peptide coding and rRNA genes, suggest an evolutionary separation of 5 million years. Although hybridization between more distantly related mammalian species may not be excluded, it is probable that the blue and fin whales are nearly as different in their mtDNA sequences as hybridizing mammal species may be. The three-dimensional structure of habitats is a critical component of species' niches driving coexistence in species-rich ecosystems. However, its influence on structuring and partitioning recruitment niches has not been widely addressed. We developed a new method to combine species distribution modelling and structure from motion, and characterized three-dimensional recruitment niches of two ecosystem engineers on Caribbean coral reefs, scleractinian corals and gorgonians. Fine-scale roughness was the most important predictor of suitable habitat for both taxa, and their niches largely overlapped, primarily due to scleractinians' broader niche breadth. Crevices and holes at mm scales on calcareous rock with low coral cover were more suitable for octocorals than for scleractinian recruits, suggesting that the decline in scleractinian corals is facilitating the recruitment of octocorals on contemporary Caribbean reefs. However, the relative abundances of the taxa were independent of the amount of suitable habitat on the reef, emphasizing that niche processes alone do not predict recruitment rates.  相似文献

Ethical discussions around ancient DNA (aDNA) research predate the technological breakthroughs that led to the accelerated generation of ancient genomic data, revealing a long-due need to address these aspects in the field. Given the diverse conflicts that genomics has raised towards the communities associated with the Non-living Human Ancestors under study, it has been suggested that the ethical and legal implications of genetically studying present-day and ancient human populations should be considered case-by-case. Nevertheless, the discussions have focused on US and European perspectives. To contribute from a local and Latin American position to the problem, we present the history of consensus and disagreement of the relationships between scientists and Indigenous communities of the Atlantic coast of the central Argentinian Patagonia. We describe how these relationships resulted in the approval of a groundbreaking provincial law that acknowledges the Indigenous community's right to be involved in decision-making concerning their Ancestors. In addition, we emphasize how these established relationships allowed the development of aDNA studies. With this background, we address the main ethical concerns of genomic studies of Ancestors identified in the reference literature and commit to applying some of the recommendations suggested in those ethical guidelines. Then, we reflect on possible negative consequences of ongoing research and propose some suggestions based on personal experiences that will contribute to moving the ethical field towards a more contextualized science with a local perspective.  相似文献

Understanding the evolution of an epidemic is essential to implement timely and efficient preventive measures. The availability of epidemiological data at a fine spatio-temporal scale is both novel and highly useful in this regard. Indeed, having geocoded data at the case level opens the door to analyze the spread of the disease on an individual basis, allowing the detection of specific outbreaks or, in general, of some interactions between cases that are not observable if aggregated data are used. Point processes are the natural tool to perform such analyses. We analyze a spatio-temporal point pattern of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases detected in Valencia (Spain) during the first 11 months (February 2020 to January 2021) of the pandemic. In particular, we propose a mechanistic spatio-temporal model for the first-order intensity function of the point process. This model includes separate estimates of the overall temporal and spatial intensities of the model and a spatio-temporal interaction term. For the latter, while similar studies have considered different forms of this term solely based on the physical distances between the events, we have also incorporated mobility data to better capture the characteristics of human populations. The results suggest that there has only been a mild level of spatio-temporal interaction between cases in the study area, which to a large extent corresponds to people living in the same residential location. Extending our proposed model to larger areas could help us gain knowledge on the propagation of COVID-19 across cities with high mobility levels.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to detect if hypothalamic-pituitary maturation was accompanied by significant proliferation changes in differentiated pituitary cell pools. For this purpose, pituitary corticotroph (Ct), mammotroph (Mt) and somatotroph (St) proliferation activities were scanned in intact female rats during the postnatal (P) period (1–35 postnatal days). The techniques of tritiated thymidine labelling, immunostaining and autoradiography were combined to visualize DNA synthesis of hormone containing cells. Immunoreactive cell densities were measured using image analysis, and double labelled cells were counted. Corticotroph proliferation activity increased significantly on day P12, followed by an increase in the Ct proportion on days P13–14. This is the first observation of a spontaneous change of corticotroph proliferation at the end of the stress nonresponsive period. The mammotroph density and proliferation rate increased gradually during postnatal maturation, until the Mt pool overran other cell types of the female hypophysis on day 35. The somatotroph pool was the most numerous until day P20; the proliferation rate remained constant while St proportions increased reaching a plateau between days P13 and 20, then decreased to the adult level. Each cell type examined showed a characteristic, individual density and proliferation pattern.  相似文献

We present results on cross-mating experiments using Brachionus plicatilis strains collected in three ponds of a coastal marsh (Torreblanca Marsh, Castellón, Spain). These strains were known to differ widely both in morphology and allozyme patterns from a previous study, where they were grouped into three genetically different clonal groups. Although some of the strains co-occurred in the same pond and sexual periods overlapped, no gene flow was found among them. Our first objective was to determine whether behavioral reproductive isolation was responsible for the absence of interbreeding. A second objective was to explore the relationship between sexual isolation and genetic divergence. We performed two experiments. In Experiment 1, we tested five strains from different clonal groups; in Experiment 2, we added a strain from a congeneric species, and strains from different ponds. We recorded male mating behavior in all possible male-female strain pairings. Our data show that males of a strain tend to mate with females of the same strain or genetically similar strains, regardless of the pond they come from. We also found a high positive correlation between isolation distance and genetic distance. These results support the view that mating behavior acts as an important isolating barrier giving cohesion to clonal groups, and structuring populations of this rotifer, and that Brachionus plicatilis is a taxon composed of more than one biological species.  相似文献

It is controversial whether odontocetes (toothed whales) and mysticetes (whalebone whales) have a common ancestry. Cetacean karyological uniformity, which is unique among mammalian orders, suggests a monophyletic origin; however, several anatomical authorities have maintained that odontocetes and mysticetes are diphyletic. We investigated the issue using Southern blot hybridization. Two labelled restriction fragment probes from the DNA of the sei whale (a mysticete) were hybridized to restricted DNA of cetacean species representing all extant families except the Eschrichtiidae, the gray whales. The probes hybridized to specific restriction fragments in all odontocete and mysticete materials. Hybridizations showed preservation of hybridization homologies and a striking conservation of the length of highly repeated DNA sequences. The results are compatible with a common ancestry of odontocetes and mysticetes.  相似文献
